What you need:
8 chicken breast halves or thighs with bone and skin - 3 cloves of garlic, minced - 1/2 onion, chopped - 2 teaspoons of butter - 2 cups of ketchup - 1/2 cup of brown sugar - 1/4 cup of molasses - 1/2 cup of chili sauce - 1 teaspoon of paprika - 2 tablespoons of worcestershire sauce - 1 tablespoon of dry mustard - 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt - 2 dashes of tabasco sauce - 2 tablespoons of vinegar - 1 teaspoon of cumin - 1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves - 1/2 teaspoon of oregano
saute pan - wooden spoon - long handled tongs - Dutch oven - paper towels - large plastic container - basting brush - serving dish - charcoal or gas grill - chimney starter - charcoal or propane
How to make it:
Dissolve 2 tablespoons of salt and 1/4 cup of brown sugar in a large plastic container that has 2 quarts of water in it. Add the chicken and marinate in the refrigerator for 2 hours or overnight. Take out the chicken pieces and dry them with paper towels.
In a medium sized Dutch oven, saute garlic and onion in butter just until tender, not brown - mix in the remaining ingredients and simmer 30 min.
Pre-heat your grill to a medium heat - with a paper towel, rub some olive oil on the grill grate - grill chicken for 5 minutes on each side.
Put the pieces in a Dutch oven, turning once so all sides are coated with the BBQ sauce. Cook with 18 coals on top and 6 underneath for 45 minutes.
To make at home - after grilling the chicken for 5 minutes on each side - lay out pieces on a cookie sheet and put in a 375 degree oven - bake for 15 minutes - cover pieces completely with bbq sauce and bake for another 15 minutes - turn and bake another 15 minutes - total baking time 45 minutes.
Grilling chicken first takes away most of the fat.
You can use boneless, skinless chicken - it just won't be as tasty.

You can saute the garlic and onion in oil, if you prefer, instead of butter.
