Bitterroot National Forest Campgrounds


The Bitterroot National Forest has many nice campgrounds that offer outstanding camping sites. It is located in Southwest Montana and extends into Idaho. It’s 1.6 million acres contain two Montana wilderness areas - Selway Bitterroot Wilderness and the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness. The rugged peaks of the Bitterroot Mountains, an abundance of wildflowers and majestic wildlife all offer unparalleled beauty.

Bitterroot National Forest camping gives you many opportunities for making memories to treasure.

 

 





The Bitterroot National Forest has 4 ranger districts to manage the forest service camping:

Darby Ranger District

  • Black Bear Campground - 16 miles southeast of Hamilton - 6 sites - no charge - adjacent to Skalkaho Creek
  • Lake Como Campground - 6.5 miles north of Darby - 11 sites - fee area - in pine trees and boulders below Lake Como Dam - water and electric hookups
  • Schumaker Campground - 25 miles northwest of Darby - 6 sites - no charge - overlooks Twin Lakes
  • Upper Como Campground - 6.5 miles northwest of Darby - 11 sites - fee area - heavy forest, furthest campground from the dam

West Fork Ranger District

  • Alta Campground - 34 miles southwest of Darby - 15 sites - fee area - in huge ponderosa pines on the West Fork of the Bitterroot
  • Rombo Campground - 22 miles southwest of Darby - 15 sites - fee area - close to the West Fork of the Bitterroot
  • Sam Billings Memorial Campground - 18 miles southwest of Darby - 12 sites - no charge - next to Boulder Creek and the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness
  • Slate Creek Campground - 28 miles southwest of Darby - 4 sites - no charge - on the east side of Painted Rocks Reservoir and on the banks of a small stream
