Gallatin National Forest Campgrounds

The Gallatin National Forest is located in South Central Montana just north of Yellowstone National Park. There are 3 wilderness areas in this forest - the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness and Lee Metcalf Wilderness. There are many great hiking trails here and it is home to many species of wildlife. You will also encounter some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the country.

 

The Gallatin Forest has 4 districts to manage the campgrounds

 

 

 

Bozeman Ranger District of Gallatin National Forest 



  • Battle Ridge Campground - 22 miles north of Bozeman - 13 sites - no charge - in the Bridger Mountains at the top of Bridger Canyon
  • Chisolm Campground - 18 miles south of Bozeman - 10 sites - fee area - south end of Hyalite Reservoir in the pines
  • Fairy Lake Campground - 22 miles north of Bozeman - 9 sites - no charge - high in the Bridger Mountains at a pretty mountain lake
  • Greek Creek Campground - 10 miles north of Big Sky - 14 sites - fee area - hiway splits campgrounds, half is along the river
  • Hood Creek Campground - 17 miles south of Bozeman - 18 sites - fee area - on the shores of Hyalite Reservoir
  • Langhor Campground - 12 miles south of Bozeman - 10 sites - fee area - on the banks of Hyalite Creek
  • Moose Creek Flat Campground - 8 miles north of Big Sky - 13 sites - fee area - open sites on the banks of the Gallatin River
  • Red Cliff Campground - 6.5 miles south of Big sky - 68 sites - fee area - in pine trees along the Gallatin River
  • Spire Rock Campground - 28 miles south of Bozeman - 16 sites - fee area - in dense trees along Squaw Creek
  • Swan Creek Campground - 9 miles north of Big Sky - 11 sites - fee area - in dense evergreens along the creek

  • Bear Creek Campground - 10.5 miles northeast of Gardiner - 4 sites - no charge - primitive site, not suitable for trailers
  • Canyon Campground - 16 miles north of Gardiner - 18 sites - fee area - close to Yellowstone Park
  • Chief Joseph Campground - 4 miles east of Cooke City - 6 sites - fee area - in heavy trees close to Yellowstone Park
  • Colter Campground - 2 miles east of Cooke City - 23 sites - fee area - spectacular views, close to Yellowstone Park
  • Eagle Creek Campground - 1.5 miles east of Gardiner - 13 sites - fee area - next to creek, close to Yellowstone Park
  • Soda Butte Campground - .5 mile east of Cooke City - 20 sites - fee area - in pines along creek, close to Yellowstone Park
  • Timber Camp Campground - 9 miles northeast of Gardiner - dispersed sites - no charge - both open sites and some in the trees
  • Tom Miner Campground - 27 miles north of Gardiner - 16 sites - fee area - in heavy trees along Tom Miner Creek

  • Bakers Hole Campground - 3 miles northwest of West Yellowstone - 72 sites - fee area - thick pines along the Madison River, close to Yellowstone Park
  • Beaver Creek Campground - 24 miles northwest of West Yellowstone - 64 sites - fee area - in heavy trees, close to Quake Lake
  • Cabin Creek Campground - 22 miles northwest of West Yellowstone - 15 sites - fee area - in thick trees along Cabin Creek
  • Cherry Creek Campground - 14 miles northwest of West Yellowstone - dispersed sites, - no charge - in thick trees by Hebgen Lake
  • Lonesomehurst Campground - 10 miles northwest of West Yellowstone - 25 sites - fee area - south end of Hebgen Lake, close to Yellowstone
  • Rainbow Point Campground - 10 miles northwest of West Yellowstone - 82 sites - fee area - in thick pines next to Hebgen Lake, close to Yellowstone Park

  • Chippy Park Campground - 35 miles south of Big Timber - 7 sites - fee area - in pines along the river
  • East Boulder Campground - 25 miles southeast of Big Timber - dispersed sites - no charge - on the banks of the East Boulder River
  • Falls Creek Campground - 30 miles south of Big Timber - 8 sites - no charge - tent sites only along the Boulder River
  • Halfmoon Campground - 23 miles northwest of Big Timber - 12 sites - fee area - in the Crazy Mountains with Big Timber Creek in the canyon below
  • Hell’s Canyon Campground - 40 miles south of Big Timber - 11 sites - no charge - in thick pines on a hilltop high above the Boulder River
  • Hick’s Park Campground - 46 miles south of Big Timber - 16 sites - fee area - picturesque sites along the Boulder River, very rough road
  • Pine Creek Campground - 15 miles southeast of Livingston - 26 sites - fee area - heavily forested next to Pine Creek
  • Snowbank Campground - 27 miles southeast of Livingston - 11 sites - fee area - aspen trees and brush along Mill Creek
  • West Boulder Campground - 30 miles southwest of Big Timber - 10 sites - fee area - pines and aspen trees close to West Boulder River
