"Much Cheaper Than the Store Bought Kind"

We’ll show you here how to make play dough in different varieties - cooked play dough, as well as non-cook play dough - peanut butter play dough, kool aid play dough, glitter play dough, and more.

Play dough is a great thing to have along when you are camping with kids - when they need something to keep them busy it works well.

Here's How To Make Play Dough

Basic play dough:

2 cups of flour - 2 cups warm water - 1 cup salt - 2 tbsp. cooking oil - 1 tbsp. cream of tartar

Mix it all together - stir while cooking over low heat while it thickens. When it pulls away from the sides and begins to clump together in the middle, remove from heat and let cool. If it is sticky, it needs to heat longer. Turn it out onto a hard, clean surface and knead until smooth. Divide to color - make small balls and put a thumbprint on top - put a few drops of food coloring in and keep folding it over until the color is well mixed. The concentrated food color will stain your hands, so you can use a spoon to fold it over and over, put it in a ziplock bag, or you can wear light plastic gloves. After it is mixed, the color won’t stain your hands.

Store it in the refrigerator in zip lock bags - if it starts to get a little bit dry, add a few drops of water and knead - if you add too much water, just heat again. There is a point where it would be too dry and you will have to start over - the good thing is that it isn’t hard to do.

If there are some creations you want to keep - put them in the sun to dry for about a week or bake them in a low oven for 10 minutes. They can be painted after they are hard.

Non-cook Play Dough

4 cups flour - 2 cups hot water - 1.5 cups salt - 1.5 tbsp. cream of tartar - 2 tbsp. oil

Using a stand up mixer and the dough hook, mix 3 cups flour with rest of the ingredients for 5 minutes - add more flour as needed to get a nice soft,

Peanut Butter Play Dough

12 ounces of creamy peanut butter - 6 tbsp. honey - 1 ½ cups of flour - 1 ½ cups of powdered milk. Mix all together and knead until smooth. If it is too sticky, add small amounts of powdered milk.

Kool Aid Play Dough

1 cup flour - ½ cup salt - 1 tbsp. oil - 1 pkg koolaid - 1 cup boiling water

Mix all and knead.

Glitter Play Dough

1 cup flour - 1 cup water - ¼ cup salt - 1 tbsp. cooking oil - 2 tsp. cream of tartar - food coloring or kool aid - glitter (big flakes, not fine)

Cook over low heat, stirring all the time. When it clumps together in the middle, flatten it into a disc shape and then flip it over - when it is done, set out to cool and then knead until it is smooth. If it is sticky, heat longer.
