Montana Primitive Camping

Primitive campsites are everywhere in Montana. The Montana forest service has many, many places in the national forests where you can camp without being in a developed campground. If you get a Montana Atlas and Gazeteer by DeLorme, it will show all the forest service roads. Forest service camping will let you pretty much camp anywhere unless it says you cannot. Sometimes you will find a table and firepit, but many times there won’t be anything. The best part about these Montana campgrounds is that they are free campgrounds.

These are basically tent campgrounds, but if the roads are good enough and if there is sufficient room, you can camp in a trailer or motorhome too.

What we do if we are not sure about the road to get our 5th wheel trailer in someplace, is to unhook and leave the trailer and investigate with just the pickup. We have found many nice camping places this way.

Montana Campground Types

Most of the campgrounds in Montana will be mountain campgrounds. They are well-developed to make the most of the land and are usually very attractive and scenic. Nights in the Montana mountains do get cold, so be prepared with warm coats and extra blankets. Campgrounds in the mountains are exhilarating with their simple beauty and the clean fresh air. Many times there will be hiking trailheads right at the campgrounds, which is really handy.

A state parks campground is usually a really nice place to stay. Some are well-developed and some aren't, but they are all good places to camp. The state parks in Montana are managed by Montana Fish and Game and you can read all about them at their website.

Sometimes you will find a riverview campground or maybe one right along the banks of a river. These campgrounds are nice if you want to try your hand at fishing or if you want to go canoeing or kayaking. Many of the rivers in Montana are popular for rafting, canoeing and kayaking and if you are in a campground by a river where they do this, it is really fun just to sit and watch them go by.

There are also many lakeview campgrounds and some right on the lakeshore. These campgrounds usually have boat docks and swimming areas. Sometimes they will have an area on the lakeshore for picnics and hanging out. These are nice if you have a boat to play with or if you want to catch some fresh fish for supper. Lots of times these lakes will have wildlife come for a drink. We love to watch the ospreys dive for fish - it is so amazing! How about taking a moonlight canoe ride?

Most Montana campgrounds would be considered black bear campgrounds. Black bears are plentiful around the state and since most campgrounds are in the mountains where the bears live, it is common to see them. It isn’t difficult to prepare your campsite for bears and if they are in the area, there will be signs posted to tell you what you should do. It is also fun to see them if you are prepared and are in a safe position to watch them. Remember, they are wild!

You can also camp at many of the fishing access sites. The Montana Fish Wildllife and Parks website shows all the fishing access sites and which ones will allow overnight camping.
