Montana's National Forest Service Campgrounds

Montana Has Some Of The Best!

Some of the best national forest service campgrounds in the country are found in Montana. You can choose from tall pines campgrounds, rivers and creek campgrounds, lake campgrounds, plus many more special ones. Many of the campgrounds in Montana will have bears, elk, moose and deer nearby for you to enjoy watching.

Using these campgrounds can mean fun and affordable family vacations.

You will enjoy the fresh mountain air with a wafting of wood smoke mingled with the tantalizing odors of food cooking from neighboring sites.

If you choose a campground adjacent or close to a river, you might enjoy the challenge of catching that elusive trout and cooking it for dinner. The crystal clear and icy cold mountain streams produce exceptionally good-tasting trout.

National forest campgrounds usually do not have hook ups for water and electricity. Batteries will usually last for 3 or 4 days when camping in a trailer and if you plan on staying longer than that, a generator will keep your batteries charged. If you drive 100 miles or so, your batteries will charge again and will last another 3 or 4 days. You will find basic facilities at forest service campgrounds - vault toilets, tables, fire rings and drinking water.

Most of the access roads for US forest service campgrounds will be good, but occasionally you will find one that is rough and slow going. Forest service maps are available at ranger stations that show all the forest service roads and campgrounds.

Older national forest campgrounds often have smaller sites that will not accommodate large trailers or motor homes. This is because when these sites were developed, people only had tents or small trailers. If you have a large RV, it would be wise to check out the length that will be accommodated.

I know you will find staying at the national forest service campgrounds in Montana to be a wonderful experience -- so enjoy!
