We'll show you how to make a simplified and easy version of a shepherds pie recipe when you are camping or staying at home.
What you need:
1 pound of hamburger - 1 medium onion, chopped - 2 chicken bouillon cubes - 1 package of frozen mixed vegetables, thawed - 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce - 1 can cream of mushroom soup - 2 cups of water - 1 package instant mashed potatoes - ½ cup of milk - 2 tablespoons of butter - grated cheddar cheese.
How to make it:
1. Brown and cook the hamburger with onions in a Dutch oven.
2. Add the bouillon cubes and stir until they are dissolved and mixed in.
3. Prepare the instant potatoes - bring to a boil 1 ½ cups of water with 2 tablespoons of butter - remove from the heat and add the pouch of instant potatoes - stir with a fork just until blended.
4. Add the vegetables, Worcestershire sauce, soup and ½ cup of water - stir to mix.
5. Spread the mashed potatoes over the top and sprinkle with the grated cheese.
6. Put the lid on the Dutch oven and cook for 45 to 60 minutes with 16 briquettes on the lid and 5 underneath.
7. Rotate every 15 minutes, checking to see how it is cooking.
If you want to cook this shepherds pie at home:
1. Brown hamburger and onion in a skillet, adding the bouillon cubes.
2. Prepare the instant mashed potatoes and set aside.
3. Add vegetables, Worcestershire sauce, soup and ½ cup of water to meat mixture.
4. Stir to mix, heat and pour in a large baking dish. 5. Top with potatoes and sprinkle with cheese.
6. Bake uncovered in the oven at 400 degrees for 30 minutes.

Use lean ground beef - it has way more flavor and far less fat. If you take it frozen when you go camping and put it in the cooler with plenty of ice, it will last longer. Be sure to put it in a zip lock bag so it doesn't leak in the cooler.
If vegetables are frozen when you put them in the cooler, they should be good for 3 or 4 days as long as you have plenty of ice in the cooler. When I make this dish on a camping trip, I prefer to use fresh carrots and potatoes - then add some canned beans and whole kernel corn. You could just use canned vegetables, but I really don't care for them!
The bouillon cubes add a lot of flavor - don't leave them out. You could use instant chicken bouillon granules if you prefer instead of the cubes.
I like the instant mashed potatoes with garlic - but depending on your family's tastes, you might want to use the plain ones.
Grated cheese keeps good in the cooler as long as you don't let it get wet!
A tip for making this shepherds pie - don’t make the potatoes too runny, or they will run down and mix in with the vegetables.
