Tally Lake Campground is located in the Tally Lake Ranger District of the Flathead National Forest, which is in Northwest Montana.  This campground is a popular and favorite camping place for families and is considered to be one of the best Montana campgrounds.

This forest service camping site is situated on the northern shores of Tally Lake about 15 miles west of Whitefish, Montana.

About the Campsites

Tally Lake Campground offers basic facilities including picnic tables, campfire rings with a grate, vault toilets and drinking water.

The fee for this forest service campground is $15 per night.  Your Golden Age Passport gives a 50% discount except for the group camp site and covered pavilion.  The fee for each of these is $25 a night.

There are no hook ups available at this campground, but there is a dump station that you can use - fee is $3.00.  The maximum length for a trailer or rv is 50 feet.

There is a host available to answer questions and give you information.  If you have an emergency, they can be helpful.  They also have firewood available for $6 - $10 a bundle.

The individual camp sites cannot be reserved - they are available on a first-com, first-served basis, but you shouldn't have a problem finding a site if you get there between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.  Weekends and holidays tend to fill up the campsites, so you might want to arrive early.  The group camp site and shelter can be reserved at http://www.recreation.gov.

The maximum recommended trailer length for these campsites is 50 feet - large trailers fit in nicely.

About the Campground

Tally Lake Campground consists of 40 separate sites on 23 acres and is at an elevation of 3500 feet.  You will find 3 loops here in this campground - A and B loops are the main camping area - Northshore loop has 7 sites across Logan Creek.

The Northshore loop contains #34, which is the only campsite right next to the lake.  This loop also contains the group camping site and group pavilion.

You will find a nice boat launch here and fishing for lake, brook, bull and rainbow trout, as well as kokanee salmon and northern pike.  Tally lake is really nice for kayaking, canoeing or floating, too.

A nice beach area with picnic tables has a designated swimming area for playing in the water, swimming and floating.

Pets are allowed here, but they must be kept on a leash.  This is for their own protection, as well as for other people and animals.

There are handicapped accessible sites, a dock and restrooms.

The campground is open from the middle of May to the end of September for 14 days maximum stays.

You will often see bears and moose in and around this campground, so the correct food storage practices must be used.  There are also bald eagles and osprey to watch in their quest for fish.
